If you’ve ever looked at a lush, vibrant aquascape and wondered how the plants look so healthy and green, the answer is almost always CO2.
At Aqua Remedy Ireland, we believe that understanding Carbon Dioxide is the “secret key” to unlocking the full potential of your aquarium. In this guide, we’ll explore the pros and cons of using CO2 and break down the different systems available to help you make the best choice for your goals.
Why Use CO2? (Pros & Cons)
Before looking at the equipment, let’s look at why you should (or shouldn’t) add CO2 to your tank.
The Pros
Explosive Growth: Plants grow significantly faster and thicker with CO2.
Vibrant Colours: It is essential for achieving deep reds and bright greens in high-end aquatic plants.
Algae Prevention: By helping plants grow stronger, they out-compete algae for nutrients, leading to a cleaner tank.
Healthier Ecosystem: Managed CO2 injection can help maintain a stable, slightly acidic pH, which many tropical fish prefer.
The Cons
Initial Investment: Professional systems require an upfront cost for the regulator and cylinder.
Monitoring: Too much CO2 can be harmful to fish, so you must use a “Drop Checker” to monitor levels safely.
Maintenance: Faster growth means you’ll be trimming your plants more frequently!
Choosing Your CO2 System: 4 Common Options
There are several ways to get CO2 into your water. Here is how they stack up, including the specific sets we stock at Aqua Remedy.
1. The DIY Yeast Method (NOT Recommended)
Note: We do not sell these sets due to their unreliability. This involves mixing sugar and yeast in a bottle to create fermentation.
Pros: Very cheap to start.
Cons: Extremely inconsistent pressure. You cannot turn it off at night, which can lead to dangerous CO2 spikes, and “yeast explosions” can occur, pushing sludge into your tank.
2. "Classic" or Standard Sets (No Solenoid)
These are pressurised gas systems without an electric shut-off valve. They are high-quality but require manual operation.
Our Options: Aquarium CO2 Set Invitial Standard or Aquario Basic Set.
Pros: Professional-grade precision and stability. Much safer than DIY. Lower price point than electronic sets.
Cons: No automatic shut-off. To save gas and protect fish, you must manually turn the valve off every night and on every morning.

3. Professional Sets (With Solenoid Valve)
The “Gold Standard” for modern aquascaping. These include an electric valve (solenoid) that you can plug into a standard light timer.
Our Options: Aquarium Strideways PRO CO2 Set, Invitial Pro Set, or the Professional 2.0 Set.
Pros: Total Automation. The CO2 turns on/off with your lights. It is the safest method for fish and significantly saves gas over time. Our Strideways PRO sets feature 12V low-heat solenoids for maximum safety.
Cons: Higher initial cost compared to the Classic set.

4. Multi-Tank Systems (The Collector’s Choice)
If you have more than one aquarium, you don’t need a separate bottle for each. We offer “Duo” or “Twin” systems that split one gas source into multiple lines.
Our Options: Aquarium CO2 Duo Set Invitial (Standard or Pro) , Aquario Twin Set or Stridway Pro Plus
Pros: Massive space and cost savings. You only need to refill one large cylinder (we offer 2kg, 5kg, and 8kg options). Each tank has its own needle valve for independent bubble counts.
Cons: Requires a high-quality regulator to handle the shared pressure; if the main cylinder runs out, all connected tanks lose CO2 simultaneously.
