Welcome to the next of Aqua Remedy articles about broadly understood aquarium hobby and fish keeping in our home.
Today we will discuss probably the most popular fish in our hobby, The GoldFish.
Maybe We will start by explaining what a Gold Fish really is.
The goldfish (Carassius auratus) is a freshwater fish in the family Cyprinidae of order Cypriniformes. It is one of the most commonly kept aquarium fish.
A relatively small member of the carp family (which also includes the Prussian carp and the crucian carp), the goldfish is native to East Asia. It was first selectively bred in Ancient China more than a thousand years ago, and several distinct breeds have since been developed. Goldfish breeds vary greatly in size, body shape, fin configuration and colouration (various combinations of white, yellow, orange, red, brown, and black are known).
They are over 300 breeds recognized and available on a market. The most popular are:
There are at least a few reasons why this fish is so popular. I will mention only a few of them.
Most goldfish are usually medium or large-sized fish. To hold one piece, we should have at least 30 litres of the aquarium. 60 Litres for two and so on.
We should NEVER keep Gold Fish in glass bowls!!! Some of European Countries banned Gold Fish Bowls, as it is animal cruelty.
It is a myth that a goldfish does not need a filter. To keep our pets in the best condition possible, EVERY aquarium should have a well-functioning filter!
The fish tank should have some basic light system in place.
There is no need for a heater, as a majority of Goldfish species can live in very low temperatures.
As every fish, Gold Fish need a balanced diet in place. As part of there diets, We should mix dry food (pellets, flakes) with some frozen or live food as well.
One of the most common mistakes made by novice aquarists is overfeeding there fishes.
REMEMBER: Feed your fish several times a day in small quantities. If the food is NOT consumed in no more than 5 minutes, it means that you gave too much !!!
Goldfish tank this same as any other fish tank need strong and consistent maintenance program in place. Every week We should:
Remember: Never change all water and always treat tap water before adding to any fish tank!!!
Because Golden fish require specific conditions, can be very aggressive and can grow to very large sizes, you should not keep any other species of fish in conduction with Gold fish.
Before You buy new pet always observe them in Pet Store environment. If they act weird, have pale colours or not willing to consume food You better of postponed Your purchase.
Never buy an animal as a gift !!! It is a big responsibility and such a decision should always be taken consciously !!!
